A towable RV is chosen on two numbers that people often confuse: dry weight, which is what it leaves the factory at, and GVWR, which is what it is allowed to weigh once you have loaded water, gear and propane. Tow to the second one.

Floorplan is personal, but the arithmetic is not. Add the loaded trailer weight to your passengers and cargo and check it against the tow vehicle's combined rating, not just its tow rating. Bunkhouse layouts sleep more but carry more weight in the same length.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions buyers ask about this type

Tow to GVWR. Dry weight ignores water, propane, batteries and everything you pack, which can add well over a thousand pounds.

Check the vehicle's tow rating AND its gross combined weight rating. It is common to be inside the tow rating and over the combined figure.

Most travel trailers above about 5,000 lb tow far better with one, and many manufacturers require it.
