NEWA 7,000 lb GVWR is the entry point for a working dump trailer. Subtract a typical empty weight of around 2,000 to 2,400 lb and you are left with roughly 4,600 to 5,000 lb of payload. In practical terms that is about two cubic yards of dry topsoil, or a little over a yard and a half of wet gravel, which is heavier than most people expect.
This is the size that suits a homeowner with a long driveway, a small landscaping round, or a remodel where you are hauling your own tear-off. It is also the size most likely to be towed by a half-ton pickup without drama.
Most half-ton pickups are rated to pull 7,000 lb, but check your own door-jamb sticker rather than the brochure figure, and check payload separately: tongue weight at 12 percent of a loaded 7,000 lb trailer is roughly 840 lb, which is a real bite out of a half-ton's payload once passengers are aboard.
At this weight brakes are required in essentially every state, so you need a controller in the truck. Read how to set trailer brake gain before the first loaded trip.
